I never knew Michael Aubin as he was a toddler when I left HDLG. I do know from friends of his that he was quite a character, well-liked and supportive of his friends. Anonymous pointed out that he was in care from age 3 and abused probably from the outset not to mention cruelly bullied. I am not trying to excuse him for abusing other children but most people know that some children in HDLG were not just sexually abused by adult "carers" but some were encouraged to abuse other children for the pleasure of those abusers. Anyone who knows anything about Bowlby's attachment theory will know that children will form strong attachments to their main care-givers, especially those who show them affection or attention - even negative attention such as physical or sexual abuse. It is no wonder that Michael grew up believing that abusing was the accepted way of getting physical contact, attention and also power.

Obviously not all abused children behave as he did and he must have learned another way of being since adulthood. It is right that he should be punished, but as a "looked after child" his case is different from those who were in a role of responsiblity or care-giving in HDLG.

That is why it has to be stopped and why the State ignoring or condoning appalling (and criminal) behaviour is no way to run things.

He was ritually abused whilst under the care of SOJ - FACT.
His crimes were committed whilst he was aged 14 - FACT.

An issue that needs to be cleared up -
HE HAS NOT COMMITTED CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN SINCE BECOMING AN ADULT.

How on earth could a child brought up under these circumstances know anything about sexual boundaries?

On top of this he was horrifically bullied.

Aubins crimes are down to a failure of the SOJ more so than himself.

Aubin has now been punished.

I do hope that you, Stuart, will pursue justice for Aubin with the same passion as you have pursued justice for other victims.

I understand what people are saying - about him being an abuse victim - and being very young at the time.

No, you certainly are not. How I agree with every single word you have posted.

What a very sad story.

Children learn by example, and the examples and upbringing Michael Aubin had in the 'care' of the States of Jersey were as far removed from the norm as it would be possible to get.

I am pleased that the Judge in this case showed compassion and common sense, and as far as I am concerned it would be in the public interest to know whether or not the abuser is still alive and could be brought to justice. Likewise, the SoJ bear an equal part in the blame for the path this man's life has taken.

Let us hope they now get on with bringing the remaining perpetrators of abuse to justice, but I am not holding my breath.

I've been in the horrible horrible horrible position of being dragged through the secret family courts and ordered that I have to forgive one of my abusers - or else. (I have the court transcript of this as proof)

Those secret family courts are choc a block with child abuse survivors, who get re-abused time and time again by the "system". Not much compassion there - no wonder they keep those places as secret as possible (hey, Jack Straw, nudge nudge, wink wink?)

So excuse me if I am a bit lacking in compassion for the abusers of Haut de la Garenne Pindown right now.

It would be a fine thing if any of these people showed a smidgeon of remorse, but so far they have acted like the Staffordshire Pindown abusers - hard as bloody nails. Believe me, they have zero mercy for anyone they get their talons into - I'm sure they get orgasm out of torturing frightened people.

So why are we supposed to feel sorry for them? I was abused myself in one of those stinky "homes" and I haven't made it my lifes mission to take it out on people weaker than myself, most of the abused people just don't do that. I've spent nearly 40 years punishing myself instead - depression, overeating, tobacco addiction, self hatred, trying to block out the pain with food. (then being punished again because of being too fat to be a socially acceptable person) This blog and other compassionate places have helped me so much, coming to places like this makes me feel like a valid human being instead of a waste of space, a reject. I've given up smoking and know I will lose the weight I have gained from comfort eating.

So excuse me if I decide not to get hooked in to the guilt trip that I managed to escape from - misplaced guilt I must say, because I was the victim, not the abuser. Excuse me if I do not feel much compassion for the folk who choose to hurt little children to ease their own pain of being hurt themselves long ago.

We all have a choice - we can choose wether to be a bully or not. Child abuse is bullying in its darkest form.

when I first heard that Aubin had been sentenced I thought it was a travesty of justice but having listened to the judgement and reflected I have to conclude that (in my opinion) the sentence was fair.

The summing up noted that Aubin had been brutalized whilst in States care and that he was damaged by his experiences.

Clearly this does not excuse his crime as he went from being a victim to a perpetrator.

Why on earth should anyone have "compassion" for a man or his wife who have abused children, my compassion is firmly with those who suffered at these sicos hands. I most certainly have NO compassion whatsoever for any person, no matter who or whom they are who have not been punished for their sins against children. So from your posting just because someone has died we should show compassion, we should forgive these evil people, people who have raped, abused children, wives for self gratification. In the court case we are advised that he was taken into 'care' at age 3, his parents abandoned him and he was abused at HDLG from a young age, visited for sex by 'the bogey man' attended a staff members flat and returned with cigarettes and sweets.......clearly in payment of services rendered.

What type of life did this child have and where were his carers, how could this have happened to a small child in care.

Sadly it is an all too familiar tale, does this individual have any hope of justice for himself, for a life lost.

Will he return to Southampton and be conveniently out of the way so that any hope of justice for him against the SoJ is not possible.

I do have great sympathy for the boys he abused, but my heart goes out to Aubin as well.

If he had been born into a different family and been given love and support and positive role models he may have had a completely different life, and not have confused sexual favours for love.

What came out in court positively reinforced what a hell hole that place must have been.

I do hope the politician that stood up in the States extolling the positive experience her husband and his fellow residents had at Haut De La Garenne whilst in 'care'......accepts that they may have just been spared and that the gruesome details exposed in the court were a true reflection of how one 3 year old child was groomed to become the peadophile he is today. I can't remember the womans name .........can you Stuart? I got the impression that she was in denial...........

I phoned the police this morning she didn't know, she said that it might just be a rumour, she had to phone her boss to find out. when she rang me back she said that yes it was true. They had spoken to Alans brother in law.who confermed it. She said that there will be something in the paper tomorrow, in case I want to avoide getting it. I said that i had better let everyone know then as no one knew or belived anything. I then recived a text saying..
" just want to clarify for you was sunday the 15th he died. Trying to let eveyone know, but not many are answering.We'll keep trying.

I hope that the last 2 years he has suffered as much fear as we have over the years.

It doesn't make me feel any better knowing he is gone for good. we will never get the justice or the closure we deserve
But at least he can't do any more harm to anyone
