I must say that I think Paul Le Claires contribution yesterday was his finest speech - he has gone up in my estimation - he appears quite as peed of with his colleagues as I am - Duhamel also stated that the 'population' debate had all been done before ..............they clearly don't get the concept that if you keep doing the same thing you get the same result! May I suggest to this poster that of he/she has a spare Tuesday morning they pop into the public gallery and watch a States Assembly in progress. a real eye-opener I can tell you.

Half of them cannot string an intelligent sentence together, the Senatorial benches seem to be constantly passing notes, looking at and using their Blackberries and mobiles, whispering amongst themselves and generally behaving like restless school kids. By far the more statesmenlike are the Deputies.

It is an interesting exercise and may well decide for you who not to vote for next time round!

One of the "Team voice" contributors has interviewed Maurice Kirk I've never met him or heard of him before but appears to be a proffessional protester and an Indiana Jones type character.

The video of him was over 16 mins long but we had to edit it to less than half that because of the potential of libel and the rest of it, he names quite a few people in less than repuable activities.

Hello there, just a quick post. I noticed that in response to something I posted regarding the Tamiflu vs Elderberries, someone wrote:

I'm unsure if this was directed at my comment about chemicals or not. If it is, could you please tell me whether it was a counter-argument or in concurrence, I am a bit unsure as to what you mean.

It is much easier to construct websites these days than in the old days which were the realm of the College Professor hard-coding the ominous HTML by hand.

Why haven't I created one?

I believe that there are many good websites out there discussing science and philosophy at length - why add to another one?

Most websites become redundant after a while unless they appeal to a large target audience.

I wouldn't think that anyone would be too interested to be honest.

"Pulling my leg" - of course you must forgive me - many people come and go under the veil of anonymity - and for valid reasons. It's difficult to know whether someone is making a joke or not - some posts haven't been of that nice content. It's the problem with computers, they don't yet help us distinguish electronic emotion.

It’s Like Alan Sokal’s work – all over again.

He is a USA mathematician, who grew increasingly irritated at the misappropriation of mathematical and scientific terms, by philosophers and post-modern cultural commentators.

So he conducted an experiment whereby he wrote a spoof ‘paper’ and submitted it for publication to a specialist journal, ‘Social Text’, to see if they’d print it.

To his delight they accepted it for publication at first time of asking.

Sokal’s paper was titled: “Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity.”

He subsequently wrote a very good book dealing with the issues, called “Intellectual Impostures”.

Adoption - forced and otherwise.
I may be retired from practice now, but on the mainland we seem to have moved away from adoption and the new start idea. Now we have Special Guardianship status - sort of one stop short of full adoption.
Parental Responsibility is highly diminished for parents but at leat they keep contact rights.
The Special Guardians have most of the rights and responsibilities but telling kids they can't know about their natural parents (until adults) has always seemed wrong to me.

Sincere apologies I misled you. You are quite correct I should have written and meant to write:

"I have known about elderberries for years and a friend makes a cordial every year, ready to use for winter colds or flu. It acts against suppuration therefore aiding the body's immune system."

I have no excuse I should have proof read my other post before pushing the send button. I am a mere mortal and make mistakes but this point was important.

In defense of the elder I would like to point out that the friend I referred to, who regularly gives their family elderberry cordial and elderflower cordial, has a family of high achievers who are all healthy, happy and robust individuals.

I also should have said that if in doubt consult a doctor or health professional who knows about these things.

Oh and another thing Apartame anyone?

Now. I will break cover. I am an actual pharmacist (pharmaceutical chemist, in layman's terms a 'chemist' - a Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain). I am also a researcher at a UK Higher Education Institution. I am not, and never have been, the recipient of funding from pharmaceutical compainies nor do I work "for governments, others for corporations, businesses or trusts". Can I also state quite unambiguously that I am not wealthy (and therefore able to fund my own research - and while I'm on the subject, it is quite deluded to think that anything approaching a significant proportion of researchers have enough individual wealth that they can persue their own research interests of their own volition).

Anyway, all this guff that is being spouted forth about Tamiflu (being a pharmacist I should refer to it by its' generic nomenclature of oseltamivir). Anonymous reproduces what appears to be a section of the Summary of Product Characterstics from RxList - presumably as some sort of support for his/her contention that "it contains a cocktail of chemicals,
LINKED TO BIZARRE BEHAVIOUR".

Now, I would be interested to know which of the ingredients listed he/she thinks could be the cause of 'bizarre behaviour'. If I had the time and/or the inclination, I could go through that list and tell you what each 'chemical' (as has been correctly pointed out, this term is being used by a number of posters in an innapropriate manner) is used for. Sodium benzoate for example. Mmmmm, sounds nasty doesn't it. Well, that is in there as a preservative. It has some antimicrobial action and, heaven forbid, it is found NATURALLY in a number of different fruits.

We (call us evidence-based rationalists or, if you're on the other side of the fence, puppets of big-pharma) are having to constantly fight a battle against anecdote and superstition. Unfortunately, in some jurisdictions, anecdote has, at least temporarily and in a bizarre political climate, won - with disasterous results. I too would implore people to read Bad Science, particularly the Chapter concerning Matthias Rath and his 'exploits' in South Africa which I believe is available free of charge at badscience.net.

I have never cooked an elderberry in my life. I eat them straight off the tree and my kids have too from the age of 18 months. None of us have suffered from stomache cramps or any of the nasty things described.

The cyanide content is so small that it will do no damage. You would have to eat a huge amount to get poisoned. I can guarantee that you will get the runs if you overdose on any fruit.

There is cyanide in apple pips too (I eat them also) and a fair bit naturally occurs in sea water (as opposed to the unnatural amount near our land fill sites).

A little bit of unsynthesised cyanide never done me any harm...

The key to all this is, when foraging in the woods for food, don't eat anything you don't recognise as safe. There are a lot of harmful plants out there but there are also some very tasty and healthy ones too.

Oh...and don't drink cyanide.
